So this was our first holiday as a family of four!!
We took the train to Brasov and had three nights in a self-catering apartment there. We chose to book an apartment instead of a hotel room as we thought it would give us more space and flexibility (regarding naps, usable space and breakfasts). The anticipated downside to an apartment was that we needed to bring our own beds for the kiddies, but the unanticipated downside was that all three bedrooms were connected (no corridor) via doors that didn't close very well and the curtains were just nets! We had to do a bit of jiggery pokery to make it work, so I think we will try a hotel suite next time.
Taking the train up was fine in itself (we had booked our tickets online and they accepted our electronic ticket) as we could look out of the window at the gorgeous countryside, but the annoying part was that there was an immovable bloke in the four seat in our set of three around a table. We had a bit of a time getting a taxi from Brasov station into town (note the standard fare seems to be 20lei, not the 8lei in the guidebooks), and getting a taxi to collect us from Gard de Nord afterwards (too many exits), but otherwise it worked out.
So - onto the holiday itself!
Well, Brasov is beautiful. And it's small. Which meant we could easily walk/buggy around the town and see the sites, find places to eat and do things. Our days consisted of an activity in the morning (E napping in the sling) and then lunch out (Bravarier - service without a smile) and home for afternoon nap time for the two of them (which varied between an hour nap or no nap for Leila one day). Then out again for a play in the park, a chocolate ice cream (we are on holiday!) and finding some tea. Home, bath and bed. We tended to follow the two kiddies in to bed soon after they went as they were both waking up numerous times in the night. E didn't settle too well in the travel cot that we carted up with us and Leila just wasn't used to her 'holiday bed' and woke three times before 11pm one night and a further six times overnight! Exhausting!!!
On our first full day we walked up the mountain to the Brasov 'Hollywood' sign and then caught the cable car back down (10lei well spent!). Guide books say that the walk takes an hour and we took only lightly more than that with the two of them in slings so we felt very chuffed. Once Leila was in her sling she took some convincing to get her out of it! But we did manage to get her to take a few steps by herself on the mountain before she demanded a snack.
On our second full day we did a walk around the fortifications of the old city. This was really cool again to get some beautiful views, but our enjoyment was slightly curbed by Leila's hunger for snacking and then her hunger for walking. We took the buggy with us but unlike the day before she didn't step foot in it once and insisted on walking the whole time!
