First bike - First bite!

Leila got her first bike today!

And Edward sprouted his first tooth (front bottom right)

Gingerbread men!

Leila and I had a great time today making Gingerbread Men (without the ginger in...). She was very good at using the rolling pin and the shape cutter. We then swapped tasks and she was in charge of adding the regulation three buttons to each man (only getting away with two men that had raisin hands and eyes as well!).

Edward at seven months

OK now time really is flying past!  This month has gone really quickly and it feels like so much has happened in it too.

Edward is now sitting really well by himself and so he can play 'sitting up' which means we've pulled out a few now/old toys for him to explore from that position.  It also means he is getting on well with sitting at meal times (but more on that in a minute). Edward loves lunging for Leila's toys and books (a few chewed corners already) and lunging after her too (ouch - my hair!).  He is also grabbing for my phone and my hair (especially when he is hungry and I'm sitting down to feed him) and everyone's face!  He can be very giggly at times and smiley.

Oh and then there is the crawling - well nearly crawling. Edward is a 'commando crawler' as he lunges and drags himself along the floor to get to whatever he desires (Leila's stuff usually).  He can support himself in the proper crawling position, but isn't strong enough to convert this into a proper crawl.  He can get a fair distance with his lunge/drag movement so we all have to be on the look out.

Edward still spends a lot of time in the sling when we go out.  I have put him in the buggy a few times when we are out (like when we went to Ikea the other day and Leila walked around the shop with her mini-trolley while Edward sat in the buggy). I think he likes seeing a bit more of the world, but he's not falling over himself to stay there.  The sling is proving a bit difficult on long car journies as he wants to see a bit more (and be less warm!)

Edward is loving his food and meal times now take forever!  He will just sit and eat until we pretty much stop him!  Food tends to be shredded into small fragments and then distributed around him (floor, face, chair etc), but a fair amount is still getting in which is great.

We had a bit of a scare this month as on returning from the UK Edward had a rash on his neck and chest that got worse.  From various appointments (and email!) the docs felt that it was an ezcma / dermititus rash bought on by weaning, but not directly caused by a food allergy.  We did stop with solids for a bit though and Edward is still taking an antihistemine. His poop is looking good though and my diet is becoming more varied, so we are taking slow steps to us both eating a good diet.

Another less exciting thing is that we started some sleep training this month finally.  We have been talking about it for a long time, but at first he didn't seem to need it as he could go down for a nap sleepy but awake. This was before Christmas though (and before we moved his room), and since then it has been a neverending cycle of being poorly/travelling and needing to be cuddled, or fed to sleep.  I'm happy co-sleeping with him as it means we both get a decent amount of sleep, but the unsustainable problem is his needing to be fed to sleep and gradually placed in his cot, or needing to suckle when we co-sleep (which stops me getting out of bed to see Leila etc).  So we have been doing CIO with some success - but not yet solved all of our problems.  It has meant he will nap in his cot (after two visits during crying normally) and we have removed the 9pm wake-up he had recently started (although he still stirs at this time).  He now wakes around 11pm and 3am, but then after that he wakes regularly so I need to add further CIO in the early hours I think.

And as for Leila, well she is getting more and more talkative, great with her numbers and imaginary play and more adventurous with her rough-play too (going on all the big slides at the park!)

It's only taken the best part of a year....

...to find a play park opposite our street!

Today I took Leila and Edward out for a walk (Edward needed to nap in the sling and so Leila was in the buggy singing!) and we decided to veer away from Iancu Nicolae onto one of the side streets.  I opted for the street opposite ours which runs behind supermarket Tia.  It's a long road with huge villas on it, and at the end we discovered that it opens onto a large green area (that backs onto the local airport) and a small play park!  The play park has clearly been funded by the people who live on the street, but there isn't a gate or sign saying we can't use it so we went on in and Leila loved it!

Survived

We have all survived two long days. Long for Scotty as they have been production days and he has done two full days if rehearsal (and one of teaching) followed by two nights of show. Long for me as I've had to put the kids to bed myself for two nights. Combined with the usual tiredness 8n our part, some sleep training for Edward and a horrible cold for Scott.

Yesterday was pretty busy in the day (Inspe, lunch, nap, dr) and with tea being a little late it was soon time fir bed. Leila was pretty good - a little light hearted cheekiness,  but nothing too gringy or annoying. I got bathtime bits together with Leilas help and Edward in my arms, then ran the bath and plonked Leila in first. I then put E in fir a bit but he was just tired so he got out pretty quickly whikst L had a bit l8nger. With E in his pjs I got L out, dry(ish!), in nappy and pjs and teeth brushed. Thn we all went to Ls room for stories whilst E fed. He was happy to play a bit on the story bed when it came to Ls bedtime cudle and songs which was lucky.  I then did some final boob for E and tried to put him down sleepy but awake.

I had done cio for the first time with E during his afternoon nap as he was clearly tired but not settling on me (boob or sleeoy shoulder). It obviously wasn't nice to do but after three visits to reassure him he fell asleep. He needed two visits that eveningas I put him to bed (and one cio during the night) and during naps today he neded one. So hopefully this will get him on track for better going down at nap time and longer nighttime sleeps.

Today was a little harder to fill as we had no playgroups.  We did manage a morning walk (and short sling nap for E) follwd by three lovely skypes. E managed one long nap over lunch and one shorter one late afternoon (tag team7ng with L meaning I didn't have a break from them). After he woke we skyped nanny, but he was pretty gringy the whole time for some reason. L saved her gringy until teatime when she decided she didn't want chicken but meat instead - luckily I could conjure up some in the mwave. At bathtime we had the added task of Es new creams but coped. I think E enjoyed storytime (he hardly fed but kept looking up at all the different voices!) But was great going fown himself.

Here is the state of the l7ving room afterplaying eith nearly every toy today!!

Edward's continuing saga with the docs

So we've just got back from seeing not one, but two docs today at Regina Maria.  On top of this we saw our GP last week and two weeks ago we saw the gastroenterologist in the UK too.

Dr Hyer in the UK reassured us that we were right to think 'food allergy' but that his approach focuses on a more normal diet, but abnormal poo (rather than abnormal diet striving for normal poo). He suggested that I reintroduce everything apart from dairy into my diet and gradually to BLW with Edward, building up to a few key foods.  After that he said that I could email him and he would then suggest when i could move back onto dairy and when to try Edward on it too.  I felt very positive after this appointment, and remembered his advice from when he saw Leila, that the child can gain tolerance to something by trying it through the breastmilk. He also made us feel a bit better about his slow weight gain; that yes Edward was a little slim around the waist, but that he still had some good thighs on him and that putting him on solids would help the weight gain ("if you husband had legs like that you'd leave him!").

So on we went with BLW.  Edward's first food was cucumber at lunch during half term! He was a little under six months, but was sitting well we thought and was so desperate to eat something!  We then gave him broccoli and cauliflower. BLW classics! It was amazing how easily he seemed to get to grips (no pun intended) with it all. And how much made it into his nappy.  It felt like he was way ahead of Leila at this early stage.

When we were in the UK we started him on apple, carrot and banana. And returning here we gave him parsnip and courgette.

But this is when things started to go slightly wrong.  In the UK he developed a rash - that started on his chin as a red patch but then extended to spot on his neck and chest and then appearing on his back, back of knees etc.  I put the rash down to being dribbly in the UK, but it clearly was something more than that as it just kept getting worse.

We happened to have Ed's appointment with the GP here for his vaccinations and she saw the rash and commented that she thought it was an allergy.  When it didn't clear up a week later (after we used E45, Aveeno and Sudeocrem on it, kept it dry and changed his solids) we went back and she prescribed an antihistamine for him. On the antihistamine the rash cleared up after four days and we were really releaved, but once he stopped it, the rash started to reappear!  The rash not is coming and going without much rhyme or reason it seems.  Generally his skin is dry and some pinprick red spots on his body, but at times these become redder and at times his face becomes redder too.

We thought it was worth emailing Dr Hyer in the UK to get his take on it all.  He thought it looked like infantile eczema which we could treat with a steriod cream, but is unlikely related to food.

Luckily we had an appointment booked in with Dr Serbanica out here this week and we saw her today.  She agreed that it was atopic dermitis and that it was unlikely to be related to food, but could be due to having the vaccination (even though the rash started before this), washing power (we washed clothes in the UK), or just one of those things! She wanted us to see an allergy doctor though to confirm a diagnosis and recommend a course of action, and luckily there was one next door!  So we were able to wait a little longer and see her after she had caught up on our case notes.  She agree with atopic dermititis and has prescribed a general moisturizing cream (for a month), an antihistamine (for ten days) and a steroid cream (a very small amount for a few days as needed). And she wants to see him again after the ten days.

So we're back onto solids - Edward will be pleased. But into a regime of creams to hopefully keep his beautiful baby skin beautiful.

Not the greatest of days

Today wasn't the greatest of days.
Both Leila and Edward were up in the night meaning that no one slept well.  Then Leila was up early again, soon followed by Edward.
We had an OK morning; trip to Monster Shop (Lidl) and Tick Tock (BSB Toddler group), but it was then that things started to fall apart.  Leila was so tired out that I couldn't keep her awake in the buggy on the way home.  I could have tried harder to keep her awake by talking to her and constantly poking my head round, but on the busy road and with Edward needing to nap, it just didn't seem feasible. She was fast asleep and had about a 30-minute nap.
I pushed back her afternoon nap and it looked like she would go down, but she was just talking to herself in her cot.  I had to keep her in there though as then it was Edward's turn to go down.  He's needing a lot of help settling at the moment and so this took some time.  Leila was calling out so I went in to settle her and tuck her in, but this seemed to have the opposite effect.  I tried again after another wait, but then it seemed like no nap was going to happen so I went to get her up.  She was happy enough about this but wanted a cuddle and a story in her room. I was fine about this, but this pushed back our 'movement' time to just as Edward was going to be in his light part of sleep and of course he then woke up!
Leila wasn't in a gringy mood in the afternoon without a nap, but was in a fussy one.  She wanted to start every activity I suggested, but then move on to something else.  This was exhausting and I'm sorry that I did loose my patience with her as I was trying to get her ready to go outside to play.  In all this I hit her mug and it broke and there were tears all round. I really need to try and stay calm and maintain a balance between being consistent in my message, but also listen to what she wants.
I also need to keep reminding myself that they are the most important thing.  I took my focus off this thisafternoon too, as I was trying so get other things done like making dinner (without a nap from Leila I had no 'alone' time to try and do this) and getting the house in order.  When I finally got everyone outside and my chance to hang the washing up I didn't fasten Edward into his rocker and he managed to roll himself out of it and fall onto the decking.  Tears, bruising and a very upset boy which could have all been easily avoided.
Oh and the icing on the cake was of course that Leila stood up on her chair at tea time and managed to fall off it and bang her elbow.

Mothering Sunday

Today was Mother's Day and I had a lie-in until the dizzy heights of 7.30am!
Scotty was drafted in to get Leila up when she woke at 6.20am but Edward stayed down until 8am which was perfect as it allowed me time just with Leila to open the presents she had wrapped with Scott.
(Edward only slept until 8am because he had been up half the night with his stuffed nose that meant he was struggling to feed and needing to be given the saline nasal spray and rocked to sleep!)

We had a lovely play in the morning, doing lots of puzzles with Leila and some books with Edward (who is now sitting up pretty well by himself).  Edward sat in his new walker play chair and Leila was good at playing with him in it (yesterday she mainly wanted to get in it herself!). Edward's nap was a little later than usual and he did a decent length (1.25hr) so we decided not to go to Baneasa mall for shopping/lunch but just to walk down to the Don instead. It was a real treat to have burgers and both Leila and Edward were good there!

Afternoon naps were a little less successful (trying to get Edward to nap meant he was crying and woke Leila up - but a big cuddle finally got her back to sleep), but in the end we made it to bathtime (in a steamy bathroom full of olbas oil!).

Being a mum of two now has really opened my eyes to what our mums went through when they had us to look after. It's much more than twice the work having two of them - and having them so close in age too. The way that Leila is so talkataive, clever, mischevious, amusing, cheeky and challenging makes me imagine that this is what we were like for our mums and gives me a whole new respect for what they had to do for us at this age.  And then dealing with having Edward too and trying to keep them both happy (or at least content - well, just not crying....or just not crying all the time) - our mums were amazing as they did all this and got us to be the people we are today!  And this has made me realise that being a mum doesn't end, as our mums are still being 'mums' to us as we have asked more of them again this year, with our move and the arrival of Edward. There have been tough times, and there will be more, but we'll get there I know.

What to expect...when you have two kids......

....that you will be in a never-ending cycle of colds, sniffles and bugs.

Well that's what it seems like to me!  We were so lucky in Cairo that Leila was never really that poorly (apart from her Roseola), but now that we have two (and are in contact with a lot of different kids via the playgroups etc), both her and Edward are getting everything going! Since the holidays ended in January it feels like it's been one long cold/cough for them and us.

This week Leila has got her cough back, but is not having the same runny nose as before.  She wants cuddles again, but not quite as many as last time.  She wants to watch her video (Snowdog) but again not quite as much as before. Her new favourite thing is doing puzzles and she is loving the challenge that they present (and the 'make a mess' that you can do before you start the puzzle!). The doc prescribed her an expectorant cough medicine that I managed to get her to take three partial doses of before giving up somewhat. I'm now trying the old 'olbas oil steamer' in the room at night method.

Edward was doing well up until a few days ago when he got really stuffy. Last night he was so stuffed up that he could hardly breathe out of his nose and so was struggling to feed when he woke.  This led to him getting upset and of course struggling to sleep!  I manged to rock him to sleep a few times, but then tried nasal sprays and the 'sucky thing' as well as olbas in the room. It seems that his stuffiness is so far up that the 'sucky' can't get at it.  Today we tried Vicks vapour rub on his feet at nap time and breastmilk under the nose too - something must start to work for him soon, surely?!

And Scott has it in his head and throat. And I've still got a gunky nose too.

But apart from all that..... we're doing fine really.

I feel poorly

This has been the whine from Leila of late.  She knows that she can watch the Snowdog video as a treat when she is poorly and so sometimes comes out with this line.  She doesn't get too upset though when we point out that she's 'better' really and there is other fun stuff to do instead of a video.
But in reality she has been a bit poorly. We all have.

The two weeks before half-term were a right off for both Leila and Edward as they both got nasty coughs and colds. Luckily these cleared up at the start of the holiday and so were both well enough to enjoy the break together from the Monday.

They stayed well during our trip to the UK, but on coming home both had the sniffles again for a few days (and hence her remembering that she gets to watch a video when she is poorly!). Tiredness was a factor in it all because they'd both had long days and a time difference to cope with.  Tiredness became a factor for us all soon enough though as neither slept well those first few nights resulting in sleepless nights all round.

Then there was Edward's worsening rash(es).  It's been hard to pinpoint when these started but when we were in the UK I found it hard to keep his chin and chest dry with all his dribble and trying solids.  He also tried lots of different foods over the days we were there without the three-day rest period we gave Leila.  When we arrived back he had a red patch on his chin of rash and spotting on his chest.  This last week though both have some times seemed a lot worse and sometimes seemed to be getting better.  It's also been hard to tell if they are connected, or two different rashes. At the moment his chest has lots of red spots on it that sometimes merge together and sometimes are pin pricks.  Under his chin they are gathered together and sometimes flare up (after eating? after feeding?), and on his face the red rash is sometimes blotchy and sometimes dry. Are they caused by food (or other) allergies, or wet and cold or wet and heat? Some many permutations it's impossible to figure it out.  We've cut back the foods that he's eating to the three he had before the UK, but these (cucumber, brocoli and cauliflower) are making him poo so much he's got bad nappy rash now too. He's a right mess, poor thing, but the only positive is that he doesn't seem too upset by it all.

The doc reckons that it is an allergic reaction and so we have an anti-histemine to give him a few drops of that should help clear things up at least so that we can then figure out what the cause could be as we slowly reintroduce things.  The nurse though looked at the rash too and thought it was probably a heat rash!  We're going to try this anti-histemine tonight and hope for the best.

Seeding the lawn

Today we've been sowing new grass seed on the (very patchy) lawn, in the hope that it will be slightly less rubbish this summer!

World Book Day

What else was Leila going to go as to Tick Tock on World Book Day, but the Gruffalo?! Well, she didn't really go as the Gruffalo, but_in the Gruffalo. I dressed her head-to-toe in Gruffalo clothing (slippers, gloves, hat, the lot!). Leila enjoyed play group and the reading of the Gruffalo story there (as well as making a necklace from pasta which she then painted and added glitter to).

But Leila wasn't the only one to dress up for World Book Day.  Scotty went to school as Max from Where the Wild Things Are.
