Tallinn has been on our 'to do' list since Dan and Claire (uni friends and ex-Emma Bar Managers) moved there two and a half years ago....the real impetus that made us book the trip this holiday was that they were joined in August by Brad and Emily (ex-Cairo friends who moved to Hong Kong). Two families in one city - we had to visit!
It was a very early start to the day (flight at 7am) but the kids slept in their 'travel clothes' which made getting up and in the taxi quicker!!! We took a little snooze on the first flight, but on arrival in Frankfurt Leila was clearly not just flagging, but totally wiped out. We decided to take her to the airport doctor as we were so concerned about her temperature (which turned out to be 39.5c). She clearly had something that she hadn't shaken despite making some recovery from her fever and cough earlier in the week, so the Dr stuck her on antibiotics and nurofen. After a dose of this she found enough energy to play with Edward on the airplane play area near the Departure Gates!
Saturday evening was a lovely reunion with Brad and Emily and Dan and Claire at Dan and Claire's place. It was amazing to meet Joy and Simon and Lucy and Kit - kiddies all together at last! Leila did well despite feeling totally rotten.
On Sunday we attempted a walk around the Old Town, but this was pretty miserable for Leila who felt rotten still and constantly complained (perking up occasionally as she grazed on snacks). It was a beautiful city - even in the sleet!
On Monday we explored a little with Dan (who had taken the day off work to show us around!). He showed us a great little secret - the abandoned statues behind the main Museum!
In the afternoon we took a quick walk down the the beach to look out over the bay and the city. Leila was gringey but it was still cool to do.
On Tuesday Leila was starting to feel better and so we went back in to the Old Town. Apparently marzipan is a big thing in Estonia (even though they can't grow almonds as Lucy pointed out!) and so we went to a cafe/museum where you can create your own marzipan sculpture. Leila wanted to make a Pooh Bear and showed real concentration as she painted it - very proud!
